Detailing vs ceramic coating: which comes first and why

Ceramic coating over dirty paint is money wasted. Here's the exact order — detailing, correction, then coating — and when each step actually matters.

Most people assume ceramic coating is a substitute for detailing. It is not. Ceramic coating is a sealant for a surface that has already been properly prepared — and if that surface is not clean, corrected, and decontaminated before the coating goes down, you have just permanently locked in every flaw your paint had on the day of install. The coating will still cure. It will still be hard. It will just be hard on top of a mess.

This post covers the actual order — detailing, paint correction, then ceramic coating — and explains when each step earns its place and when skipping it costs more than it saves.

Why the order matters more than the products

Ceramic coating bonds to whatever surface it touches. That is both the feature and the trap. A coating applied over embedded fallout, swirl marks, or water spot etch looks like a ceramic coating under direct sun and looks like a problem under a shop light. The hydrophobic properties still work. The UV protection still works. But every imperfection underneath is now preserved under a 9H-rated shell that is actively difficult to remove without cutting back into the clear coat.

The sequence is not just a recommendation from the installer because we like more billable hours. It is chemistry. The coating molecule needs to bond to clean, bare clear coat — not to iron particles, not to wax residue, not to the ghost of last summer's pine sap.

What "detailing" actually covers (and what it doesn't)

Detailing is not a single thing. Depending on what the car needs, it can mean a basic wash and dry, a full decontamination with a clay bar and iron remover, or a multi-stage paint correction that takes the better part of two days. The word covers a wide range of work, and the work required depends entirely on the condition of the paint.

For the purpose of a ceramic coating prep, "detailing" means at minimum:
