New car, zero rock chips — yet. Here's how PPF film and ceramic coating actually differ, when you need one, and when both make sense.
The new-car smell is still in the cabin. The paint is flawless. And you are already paranoid about the drive home.
That paranoia is reasonable. A new car's paint is never more vulnerable than in the first few weeks — before the inevitable GA-400 gravel shower, before the parking lot door ding, before Georgia pollen turns your freshly waxed hood into a yellow crime scene. The two most common protective options are PPF film (paint protection film) and ceramic coating. Most people arrive at our Alpharetta or Marietta studio having heard of both and understanding neither. Here is what they actually do, where each one earns its keep, and how to decide.
What PPF film actually is — and what it stops
PPF is a urethane film, typically 6–8 mils thick, applied directly to the paint surface. Think of it as a sacrificial layer — a stunt double your paint sends out to absorb the dangerous scenes. Rock chips, road rash, light key scratches, bug acid, and gravel impacts all hit the film first. The paint underneath stays untouched.
XPEL's PPF products also carry a self-healing top coat: heat from the sun or a heat gun causes minor surface scratches to flow back out and disappear. We see this on real cars every week — a hood that took a light scrubbing from a car wash brush will look clean again after an hour in a Georgia summer parking lot.
Coverage is where the conversation gets specific. A full vehicle wrap in PPF is the most complete protection available. A partial-front package — hood, fenders, mirrors, bumper, A-pillars — is where most daily drivers land. If you do a lot of highway miles between Atlanta and Cumming, or you commute north on GA-400 past the construction zones, a partial-front PPF install handles the areas that actually get hit. The rear quarters and doors matter too if you park in tight decks regularly, but that is a judgment call based on how you use the car.
PPF does not, on its own, make the paint easier to maintain or water-bead cleanly. That is a different product doing a different job.
